You’ve heard me talk about how much I love shooting in a field. A simple, golden yellow field. It gives me shivers. Just picturing it, the crickets in the heat, the wind blowing the timothy heads like waves in the ocean. Or the vibrant greens of a new cut field, dotted with bright pink clover buds, or yellow dandelions. It’s soft and romantic but also fun and bright at the same time. It’s perfect for couples and families or horses with their owners, and it’s also perfect for maternity shoots as I found out Friday.

Philip of Philip Boudreau Photgraphy, and I have been trying to plan a photo shoot together for what seems forever, but we could never find the right time in both of our busy schedules. So when he sent me a message about this shoot, I was pumped. Philip needed a field, and a barn for a maternity shoot and was letting me tag along, too. My neighbours’ property is full of colours and textures- everything from the barn boards and the old cedar shingles, to the rust colours on the old steel sheds- perfect. Next, we went over to ‘my’ field- a place where I do a lot of my work (not actually mine, but hey). This place draws the pictures right out of your camera. I love it. Maybe I’m biased by the view, or maybe it’s because i know the history of these plots of land, I don’t really know. But it works, and I LOVE it.

So let me introduce you to Darleen and Joey. I can’t tell you much about them, because they are Philip’s clients. I know he could tell you tons about them because he shot their wedding so really it’s only fitting that he’d do their maternity pictures. But I do know a couple in love when I see them, and a couple that is so excited about their soon to be bundle of joy. Darleen has a smile that could make anyone smile back, one of those contagious ones. Joey looks at her like she’s the only girl in the world. Congratulations to the both of you! It was great meeting you, and I can’t wait to hear about Liam’s entrance to the world.

And now, the pictures! Make sure you check out Philip’s photos from the shoot over at his blog!

As I was getting my camera ready this morning to head back to Expo Kent‘s 4-H show, Dad came in the door and said, “grab your camera”. Now, I’ve gotten used to this. Grabbing your camera is usually code for there is a wild animal in the back yard, or come take a picture of what your silly ______ (insert dog, cat, horse, cow) is doing.

I’ve never been that good at being grateful for where I live. Whenever a new visitor arrives at our farm, they are always blown away by the view. Which is great, but to me it’s the same view I’ve been looking at for almost 23 years. It’s not usually until I’m looking at it through my camera that I’m really blown away. I do a lot of shoots on our farm, and my (awesome) neighbours land. Some of my favourite shots were taken right here. In my back yard. Heck who needs a studio when you’ve got what I’ve got. And whenever I want to practice, I have tons of subjects, from my horses or cows or dogs, who have all gotten way to use to posing and kind of turn a bit diva on me sometimes.

However, this morning was something new at the farm, in part to dad saying “grab your camera”. This morning, i excitedly took pictures of chickens. Now for those of you who have gotten the tour of the farm, I get giddy about my horses, and rave on about my cows. But I always make a point to saying I hate chickens. I guess I don’t hate them per say, their just… not my favourite. They’re like at the very, very bottom of the favourite list. But I went, and I shot. And I actually really like these pictures. And I wanted to blog them, so that mom can show dad later on today, cause he always complains that he never sees my pictures cause “they’re always on the computer, you don’t print any”. So here you go Dad. Thanks for getting me to grab my camera. :) <3

I’m going to let you in on a secret. A huge, major, part of who I am. Ready for it? Brace yourself. I’m terrible at remembering names. There, I said it. And to add to that, one of my biggest fears in the world is calling someone by the wrong name. At a shoot, on the fly, I use a lot of, “Your going to move here” mostly because when I’m in that shoot mood, I definitely can’t remember names.

And this ladies and gentleman, is a pair that I’m always messing up their names. Meet Anika and Mick. I’d heard of Anika quite a bit from my riding coach, as she’s involved in the MQHYA and rides out of the barn where her horse is in training. So when I needed a model for this year’s Equine Review demonstration, my coach nominated Anika, without telling her. Which was great. I met them for the first time, about fifteen minutes before walking into the ring at the PLP Show Center in May. I knew it was Anika, but when I asked the name of her horse, I heard “Nick”. In my head I’m thinking “Sweet, that’s easy enough”. And then she corrects me that it’s Mick. Which is fine. Except by the time I got into the ring “Nick” was already stuck in my head. I was so nervous at this point I didn’t even want to introduce them, but I did, and I’m pretty sure I mumbled Mick’s name in the mike.

I also have hard time remembering Anika’s name. First it’s Anick, then it’s Danika, then when I’ve finally remembered it’s Anika, I can never remember if it’s spelt with just a k or with a ck. I’m really terrible at remembering names.

As a thank you for modeling for me at Equine Review, I did a quick shoot for Anika and Mick while I was visiting Krymsun Farms in New Glasgow, NS. I’m also really excited for the design project were going to work on together for her.

Anika, you’re a sweetheart. And I’m so, so sorry if I’ve ever called you or Mick by the wrong name. I really didn’t mean to! I really hope you enjoy your pictures, and thanks again!

When Anick had heard that I was going full time photography, she had mentioned she was going to have to book a shoot. Naturally, I thought she was looking for a family shoot, as her kids are involved in the local 4-H program and I know them quite well.

Boy was I wrong. Instead of a super cute family of 4, Anick wanted me to do promotional pictures for the new, smoking hot string quartet, Jolina. I honestly didn’t even know Anick could play, let alone play in a musical group. Now I had never done promo shots for a band or a music group, but I said sure, why not? It’s not something I want to get into doing every day, but man was this fun.

Anick with all her connections, managed to get us the Moncton High School auditorium for the afternoon, which is a beautiful place to shoot. After playing around with the stage we went outside and and shot on the grounds. What a piece of art that building is.

These ladies were great. I’m pumped with how the shots turned out and they match my colours, which means the blog is beautifully colourful until my next post.

Anick, Suzanne, Nathalie and Sarah – You ladies are super talented and I cannot WAIT to see your first gig. Keep up the awesome work.

REWARD: Some pretty cool Scuffed Boots swag and a complimentary Scuffed Boots Grad session.

So I know nobody wants to think about school’s arrival in a little over a month, but unfortunately, just like how the clothing stores all have Fall styles in, I also have to be on the ball and be planning ahead. And part of that is getting everything ready for my 2011 Grads! Right now I’m looking for 2 grads from every high school in the Greater Moncton area. As a grad rep, you get the services listed above, in that lovely graphic.

So, as a grad rep, what is your “job”? After we do your free session, you will receive 50 rep cards. They will feature a photo from your session on one side, like a regular wallet, and on the reverse side, it will have some information about Scuffed Boots Photography. Your job is to hand out these cards, showing off your pictures to your friends and family, and refer them to me. For every session that is booked as a result of your promotion, you get $10 credit with me. So, if 10 friends sign up for grad pics, that’s $100 worth of products from me! You also get 10% off your total order if your parents would like to order photos. At the end of the school year, around May, I will tally up which one of my grad reps referred the most bookings, and they will be the winner of a free prom shoot! Pretty easy stuff. :) I may also ask my reps to put up posters, or other promotions at schools, if available to do so.

Because you guys are already on the ball, Harrison Trimble High School’s spots are already booked. (Go Trojans! ;) I’m not biased I promise.) But I still have spots available for most of the other schools.

So, are you interested? Shoot me an email at jill.renton@scuffedboots.ca or use my contact forum, and I’ll send you my application form!
